This photograph was taken at the Polo Grounds in New York on April 12, 1911, when the stadium was home to the New York Giants and was filling up with fans for the start of the season. Two days later, a fire destroyed the wooden grandstand, and the ballpark was rebuilt in concrete and steel, so the crowd captured here belongs to the last days of the original structure. The picture gives a sense of the early-twentieth-century ballgame as a mass public event, with fans gathered in numbers that reflected the sport's growing popularity in American cities.
