Women stand among the men in this crowd of fans queued up before the ballpark gates opened on October 5, 1920. That date was the opening game of the World Series between the Brooklyn Robins and the Cleveland Indians, when demand for seats ran high and early arrivals gathered well before the first pitch. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photographer whose pictures were sold to newspapers, so it was meant to capture a current event. It is a useful record of how mass sports crowds formed in the 1920s and of the growing presence of women as spectators at the ballpark.
