Crowds of fans queue outside the gates at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, and a vendor's hot dogs are the detail that gives this 1920 scene its character. The date, October 6, falls during the World Series that fall, when Brooklyn and Cleveland met and the ballpark drew large crowds. Ebbets Field had opened in 1913 and was home to the Brooklyn Robins. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures taken in New York, so it captures the everyday rituals of ballpark going as much as the game itself.
