The pair of prints shows George Bostic Whitted in two moments of play, one swinging a bat and facing right, the other catching a ball and facing left, both taken in 1914 and 1915. Whitted, born in 1891, played professionally in St. Louis and Philadelphia, and the record places the photographs in those cities' ballparks. They come from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made by Bain's agency in the 1910s, when newspapers relied on quick images of sports figures and public events. Full-length views like these were typical of that work and show a player's stance and form, which were often the focus of baseball coverage of the period.
