Lined up across the grandstand in what looks like a single wide frame, this 1913 team portrait belongs to the panoramic tradition that was popular with ballclubs in the early twentieth century. Panoramic exposures let a photographer fit an entire roster, coaches and often the club's owners or mascots, into one image, and teams commissioned them for sale to players and fans. Baseball was then at the height of its prewar popularity, with ballparks filling with crowds of several thousand, so a picture like this doubles as a record of the stadium and the era as much as of the players themselves.
