Here the camera catches Roger Bresnahan crouched behind the plate for the New York Giants while a Pittsburgh Pirates batter waits in the box. Bresnahan, nicknamed "the Duke," was a catcher known for his quick hands and for popularizing shin guards, which he began wearing after an injury in 1907. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs taken for the Bain News Service, and it dates to the hard-fought National League pennant race of 1908. Library staff devised the title, so the scene is best read as a snapshot of the everyday work of catching in the early 1900s.
