Mike Donlin stands full length in a baseball uniform marked "World's champions," a reference to the New York club's 1905 World Series victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Donlin played outfield for New York in the seasons that followed, and this 1906 portrait shows the formal studio style common to the period's sports pictures. The print comes from George Grantham Bain's photography business, which supplied images of news and public figures to newspapers, so it also records how the sport and its players were presented to readers at the time.
