This October 1926 team portrait is dated just over a week after the New York Yankees lost the World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games, so the players were photographed as a squad that had just finished a disappointing season-ending run. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made by a New York news photographer who documented city life, sports, and public events in the early twentieth century. Team pictures like this one were commonly taken for newspapers and publicity, giving a record of how the club presented itself during the Ruth era.
