Two of the best-known managers of the early 1910s stand side by side on a ballfield in this May 1911 photograph: John J. McGraw of the New York Giants and Frank Chance of the Chicago Cubs. The Giants and Cubs were fierce rivals in the National League, so seeing the two men posed together offers a calmer view of a contest that was anything but friendly on the field. Chance, a first baseman known as the "Peerless Leader," had guided the Cubs to several pennants and two World Series titles. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection of news photographs taken in New York.
