Two Yale players, Stagg and Warner, stand for this full-length portrait, which places the pair in the context of college baseball in New Haven. Stagg, a pitcher, is the better-known of the two: he went on to coach football at the University of Chicago for decades, but his earlier fame came from the diamond. The picture dates from roughly the turn of the 1890s, a period when intercollegiate baseball drew large crowds and when Yale's teams were among the strongest in the East. Such studio portraits of athletes were often sold as keepsakes, so they give a sense of how players presented themselves to the public.
