Danny Murphy stands in half-length profile, turned to the left, in the uniform of the Brooklyn Feds, a club in the upstart Federal League during its 1914 season. Before that move, Murphy had spent years as an infielder and outfielder for the Philadelphia Athletics, and his photograph reflects the period when the Federal League was competing with the established National and American leagues for players and fans. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs made in New York in the 1910s, and it offers a clear view of how baseball players were presented to the public at the time.
