A batter at the plate, with the catcher and umpire crouched behind him, makes up this color lithograph, a view of the game as it was played in the 1890s. The Calvert Litho. Co. of Detroit printed it, and its copyright entry is dated May 11, 1895, under the number 283. Chromolithographs like this were produced in quantity for advertising and collectors, and sporting scenes sold well as professional baseball grew in popularity. The Library of Congress staff devised the title, so the wording describes the scene rather than repeating a caption from the original print.
