A batter stands at the plate with the catcher and umpire positioned behind him, a pose that captures the tense moment before a pitch. The print came from the Calvert Lithographing Company of Detroit, which was registered for copyright on May 11, 1895, and it bears the catalog number 283. Chromolithographs like this one were built up from separate stones, one for each color, producing bright, flat hues that suited sporting scenes and advertising in the 1890s. The title was written by Library of Congress staff rather than the printer, so it describes the scene rather than quoting the original.
