Eddie Plank, the left-handed pitcher shown here, is photographed throwing a ball to loosen up in the bullpen, a detail that sets this portrait apart from more formal studies of ballplayers. Plank spent most of his career with the Philadelphia Athletics, one of the era's strongest clubs, and he later earned a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs taken in the early twentieth century, and it offers a candid look at a pitcher preparing for work.
