Eddie Cicotte, the Chicago White Sox pitcher, is shown mid-delivery, the ball leaving his hand in a moment frozen by the photographer's shutter. Cicotte was one of the most effective right-handers of the 1910s, winning 28 games for the White Sox in 1919 and becoming a central figure in the Black Sox scandal that followed that season, when eight players were tried over the fixing of the World Series. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs made in New York, and its date of 1914 rests on later research by the Society for American Baseball Research rather than on a caption from the time.
