Shown in the act of throwing, Eddie Cicotte was a right-handed pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, known for the spitball, a pitch that was still legal in 1918 and prized for its unpredictable break. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made for newspapers and agencies in the early twentieth century, and researchers with the Society for American Baseball Research dated it to 1918. Cicotte's later role in the 1919 World Series fixing scandal has made photographs of him from this period especially closely studied.
