Few buildings of its era were as large as the Merchandise Mart, which rose on the north bank of the Chicago River as a wholesale trade center for the Marshall Field company. This photograph is dated April 8, 1930, when the enormous structure was nearly new and still a striking presence on the city's skyline. Built in the late 1920s, the mart was designed to bring manufacturers and buyers under one roof, and its sheer scale made it a symbol of Chicago's commercial ambitions just before the Great Depression took hold.
