The Mather Building, often called Mather Tower, rises from the Chicago River bank on East Wacker Drive, where the new riverside boulevard had reshaped the Loop by the late 1920s. Completed around 1928, the Gothic-inspired office tower stood out among the city's stone and terra-cotta skyscrapers, and its vertical lines helped define the stretch of Wacker that was becoming a showcase for modern commercial architecture. The caption card dates the picture to April 4, around 1928, though that detail is unverified and should be read with some caution.
