Among the entries to the 1922 Chicago Tribune competition, this reproduction preserves an architectural drawing by Walter Gropius, the German architect who later led the Bauhaus. Where the winning design by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood took the form of a Gothic-style skyscraper, Gropius proposed a spare, unornamented building that anticipated the modernist style he would later champion. The drawing was published in the competition's illustrated record, which helped make the rejected entries nearly as widely discussed as the winner.
