Among the many entries in the Chicago Tribune's 1922 tower competition, Adolf Loos's proposal stands out for treating the skyscraper as a giant classical column, with a plain base, shaft, and capital instead of ornate Gothic or Beaux-Arts detailing. This plate comes from the 1923 volume that gathered the competition entries, which helped spread the designs to architects far beyond Chicago. Loos, an Austrian architect and critic born in 1870, was known for arguing that modern buildings should drop unnecessary ornament, and his entry is often cited as an early statement of that view.
