Mitchell Tower and Hutchinson Hall form part of the Gothic quadrangles of the University of Chicago, a campus that opened in 1892 with support from John D. Rockefeller. Architect Henry Ives Cobb designed the complex in a Gothic Revival style meant to recall English collegiate architecture, and Hutchinson Hall anchors the courtyard while the taller Mitchell Tower rises beside it. This glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1900 and 1915, captures the campus in its early years, when the stone buildings were still fairly new.
