Cobb Lecture Hall, one of the stone Gothic buildings on the University of Chicago's Midway campus, stands out for its tall, pointed architecture and its place among the early buildings of the institution, which was founded in 1890. The picture is a large 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American towns, landmarks and streetscapes in the years around 1900. Handwritten notes on the negative, including the word "extra," point to the careful, working nature of the photographer's process.
