Hutchinson Hall, with Mitchell Tower rising beside it, anchors the Gothic-style Main Quadrangle of the University of Chicago, the campus that Henry Ives Cobb and other architects laid out in the early 1890s after the university was refounded on the South Side. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American towns, landmarks and scenery, made this large-format glass negative in the years before 1920, when the campus was becoming a model for collegiate architecture in the Midwest. The building's stone walls and pointed arches reflect the era's admiration for English university design, and the tower's bells gave the campus one of its best-known landmarks.
