The Kent Chemical Laboratory shared its quadrangle with a theater, a pairing that reflected the University of Chicago's early ambition to bring laboratory science and public lectures under one roof. The university opened in 1892 on a campus designed to look like an established English college, with Gothic-style stone buildings set around open lawns. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American cities, landscapes and campuses for commercial sale in the early twentieth century. Notice the handwritten marks on the plate, which suggest it passed through the hands of more than one person before reaching the archive.
