The building in this print is the Ryerson Physical Laboratory on the University of Chicago campus, a stone structure completed in the mid-1890s with funds from Martin A. Ryerson, a lumber businessman and university trustee. Physics research there drew well-known scientists, including Albert A. Michelson, whose work on the speed of light was carried out in the university's labs. This c1907 view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced a large body of American scenic and architectural photographs in the early 1900s. It shows how the young university, founded in 1890, was building out its campus on the South Side.
