The Kent Chemical Laboratory was one of the early science buildings on the University of Chicago campus, which opened in 1892 after the university's founding in 1890. This view is preserved as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American towns, landmarks and institutions in the decade or so around 1900. Campus architecture of this period often borrowed Gothic and Romanesque styles, and the image gives a sense of how the young university presented its scientific work to the public.
