The Law School building at the University of Chicago is the subject here, a single campus structure rather than a general view of the city. The university opened in 1892 on the South Side with a campus of Gothic-style stone buildings, and its law program became one of its professional schools in the early 1900s. This view was made on an 8 x 10 inch glass plate negative, the large-format medium that Detroit Publishing Company used for its commercial scenic views of American cities and landmarks. Handwritten marks on the negative suggest it passed through the company's hands during printing and cataloging.
