Grant Park's lakefront view here is anchored by the Auditorium Building, the large masonry landmark designed by Adler & Sullivan and completed in 1889, with the Congress Hotel and its annex rising beside it. The park was built on land reclaimed from Lake Michigan, much of it filled with debris from the Great Fire of 1871, and by the early 1900s it had become a showcase for the city's civic and hotel architecture. This glass-plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American towns and landmarks in the decades around 1900.
