Water and shade define this view of the shoreline near the German Building in Jackson Park, a stretch of ground tied to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux shaped the fairgrounds' lagoons and walks, and by the time this glass negative was made, between 1900 and 1910, the park had become a public place for leisure. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American cities and landscapes, may have produced it, possibly through photographer Hans Behm. The 8 x 10 inch dry plate format was favored for large, detailed landscape work.
