Automobiles share the frame with the landscaped grounds in this view of a driveway in Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux laid out the park for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and its curving drives were built for carriages and pleasure traffic well before cars arrived. By the early 1900s, motorcars were beginning to appear on such roads, so the scene records that transition. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued the negative, is known for its views of American cities and landscapes, and the attribution to Hans Behm is noted as possible rather than certain.
