Jackson Park's old conservatory stood on Chicago's South Side, in a park laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux as part of the city's South Park system. The grounds later hosted the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and greenhouses of this kind supplied plants for the park's gardens. The Detroit Publishing Company made this large glass negative between 1900 and 1910, when it was producing views of American cities and landscapes. The 8 by 10 inch format suits a building of glass and iron, letting viewers study its construction closely.
