Lincoln Park's glasshouses, the conservatory and its surrounding gardens on Chicago's North Side, are the focus of this view, which shows the park as a place of plant displays and promenades rather than as a single building. The conservatory opened in 1891 and quickly became one of the city's best-known public attractions, offering tropical plants and seasonal flower shows to visitors who came from across the city. The photograph is a glass-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that made large numbers of city and landscape views around 1905 for tourism and promotion. Its 8 by 10 inch format gives the fine detail in the plantings and glass structures.
