This view shows a bridge spanning the water in Lincoln Park, the lakefront park on Chicago's North Side, as it looked around 1905. The park grew out of the lakeshore land that Chicago reserved for public use after the city's 1871 fire, and by the early 1900s its lagoons and footbridges drew strollers, boaters, and tourists. The image is one of a large set of city and landscape views made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold such scenes to travelers and to people who wanted a record of American places.
