A children's bathing beach in Lincoln Park puts a specific piece of Chicago's lakefront leisure on record around 1905. Beaches like this one, along Lake Michigan, were part of a wider effort by reformers and park boards to give crowded city neighborhoods access to open water, sunshine and fresh air in summer. The picture is a large glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, parks and scenery for sale to tourists and publishers in the early twentieth century, which makes its view of everyday public leisure especially useful to historians.
