Winding between lawns and tree-lined paths on Chicago's north lakefront, the lagoon in Lincoln Park offers a quiet counterpoint to the city's busy streets. The park grew out of lakeshore land set aside in the decades after the Civil War, and its lagoons were part of an effort to give a rapidly industrializing city naturalistic green space for walking, boating and rest. The view comes from a large glass-plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely around 1900 recording cities, resorts and scenery across the country.
