Families heading to a band concert in Lincoln Park make up the subject of this glass-plate negative, which the Detroit Publishing Company catalogued in its large turn-of-the-century series of American views. The picture dates from roughly 1900 to 1910, a period when municipal bands played outdoor concerts in city parks across the country, drawing crowds of neighbors who strolled, sat on benches, and listened together on warm evenings. Lincoln Park, the lakefront park on Chicago's North Side, was a popular setting for such gatherings. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, and its title comes from the original jacket, with a possible attribution to photographer Hans Behm.
