A flag on the hotel at the center of this view reads "The Blackstone," which identifies the building as the Blackstone Hotel on Michigan Avenue, across from Grant Park. The hotel opened in 1910, and its location on the park's western edge made it a prominent landmark for travelers arriving in the city. The picture is an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American cities and landscapes made in the early 1900s. The catalog title was supplied by a cataloger, so the park's identification rests on the flag and the hotel's position in the scene.
