The conservatory in Washington Park, on Chicago's South Side, anchors this view of the park's glasshouse. The park was laid out in the 1870s by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and its greenhouses were meant to grow and display plants for visitors. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, sold views like this one to travel promoters and railroads, so its glass negatives document how American cities presented themselves. The record suggests Hans Behm may have made the picture, which dates from between 1900 and 1910.
