Few views of Chicago's South Side parks from this period survive in such detail as this glass negative of the lily pond in Washington Park. The park was laid out in the 1870s under the design partnership of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and its water features were meant to give city residents a quiet, pastoral setting. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of travel views between the 1890s and the 1920s, made pictures like this one for sale to tourists and readers of illustrated booklets. The record notes that the photographer may have been Hans Behm, though that attribution is uncertain.
