Two civic buildings stand side by side in this 8 x 10 inch glass negative: the Municipal Court Building and the Illinois Athletic Club in Chicago. Their pairing reflects how the city's downtown was filling with courts, offices, and private clubs in the years around 1910, when Chicago was rebuilding its civic and commercial core. The Detroit Publishing Company made this view between 1908 and 1910, when its photographers were documenting American cities for sale as postcards and prints. The negative reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
