The grand ballroom of the Medinah Athletic Club, a private social club in Chicago, shows a space built for formal dances and banquets at a time when downtown clubs competed to offer the most impressive rooms. The club was linked to the Medinah Temple of the Shriners, and its large ballrooms served members who expected grand settings for public and private events. A photograph from about 1929 captures the room near the end of the decade's building boom, just before the Great Depression slowed such lavish construction. Its scale and decoration make it a useful record of how Chicago's elite clubs presented themselves.
