The Columbia Yacht Club's clubhouse and the water beside it are the focus of this view of Chicago's lakefront. The glass negative, 8 by 10 inches, came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American cities and landscapes around 1900. The record dates it between 1900 and 1915 and tentatively credits Hans Behm as the photographer. Yacht clubs of that period were social centers for the city's prosperous families, and their waterfront buildings show how the lakeshore became a place for sailing and leisure.
