The photograph shows the first of the swimming tanks at the Medinah Athletic Club, a Chicago social and fitness club associated with the Medinah Shriners and their temple organization. Pools like this were a prized amenity in the 1920s, when private athletic clubs offered members a place to swim, exercise, and socialize in a city where public indoor pools were limited. The image is dated to about 1929, a period when many large downtown clubs were building lavish interiors, and the tiled tank and surrounding architecture reflect that era's confidence in indoor recreation. The date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
