Few buildings on Michigan Avenue in the late 1920s had the ambition of the Medinah Athletic Club, whose exterior is the subject of this c1929 photograph. The club was built as a social and athletic home for members of the Medinah Temple, the Chicago Shriners, and it rose during the years when the avenue was being transformed into the commercial and recreational stretch now known as the Magnificent Mile. The print records the building's street facade as it stood at the close of the decade, a period when Chicago was investing heavily in new clubs, hotels, and office towers along the river's north side.
