Medinah Temple, the Chicago home of the Shriners' Medinah Shrine, is the subject of this May 6, 1923, glass negative, made by the National Photo Company. The company was a commercial firm that documented American cities and landmarks in the early twentieth century, and its negatives are valued as a record of how places looked in that period. Temple buildings of the Shriners drew on Moorish and Islamic-inspired design, which gave their architecture an exotic character that set them apart from the city's commercial blocks. The negative shows the streaks and blemishes that come from age in its glass plate coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
