The subject is Dearborn Street Station, one of the passenger terminals that served Chicago's South Loop, a stop for trains arriving from the western and southern rail lines. Its brick headhouse and train sheds were typical of the large railroad stations built in American cities during the late 1800s. This view was made on a 5 by 7 inch glass dry plate negative between 1900 and 1915 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for photographing towns, rail lines and landmarks across the country for sale as prints and postcards. The plate later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado, which gave it to the Library of Congress in 1949.
