Looking south from Madison Street, this view shows the commercial stretch of State Street in Chicago, which was then the city's leading shopping thoroughfare. Department stores and retail businesses lined the street and drew shoppers from across the city and beyond. The Detroit Publishing Company made the negative on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, and the firm's photographers traveled widely to document American cities and landscapes in the years between about 1900 and 1915. Plates this large recorded fine architectural and street-level detail, which makes the image useful for studying the era's storefronts and city life.
