A lake vessel named the Pere Marquette 18 moves along the Chicago River past the State Street bridge, with the drawbridge span and the city's riverfront rising behind it. Chicago's river bridges had to lift or swing open for ships traveling between the river and Lake Michigan, and tugboats often helped larger vessels through the narrow channel, so the scene shows a working waterway at its busiest. The glass negative dates from between 1900 and 1910 and belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American cities and transportation in those years. The record suggests it may be the work of Hans Behm.
