Looking north from the front of the Palmer House, this view shows State Street in the heart of Chicago's downtown, with streetcar tracks running down the middle of the roadway. The Palmer House, rebuilt after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, was one of the city's best-known hotels, and the stores around it drew shoppers from across the city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued large-format views of American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century, made this glass plate negative between about 1900 and 1910. Pictures like this show how crowded, streetcar-served avenues worked before the automobile came to dominate city streets.
