State Street, looking south from Lake Street, was one of Chicago's busiest downtown shopping corridors in the years before 1910, when department stores and retailers lined the Loop after the city rebuilt from the 1871 fire. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American cities, towns, and landscapes made around the turn of the twentieth century. The record notes a "Dup" marking, so this is a duplicate negative, and it reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. The view offers a useful record of the street's commercial character and its crowded, horse-and-streetcar era.
